A Family Trip

So Friday afternoon we piled into a 15 passenger van with Emily and her Daddy’s family.  We drove and drove and drove to Mankato.  I really thought it was closer.  Saturday the family spent the day skiing and sledding.  Unfortunately we found out when we got there that Emily is much too short to sled so we spent the day in the lodge watching all the people.  Sunday morning we finally had a few minutes.  I was so excited to take Emily swimming in the pool.  She didn’t have quite the same excitement for it.  I think she lasted about five minutes before she was crying for daddy to hold her outside the pool where it was safe. Then Sunday afternoon back in the car, drive, drive drive home.  It was a tough weekend for Emily, but despite a lack of sleep, she did amazingly well.  Then Monday we had the day off to recover-thank goodness.  She really needed it.  She was a little crabby but two naps later she seemed like herself again.  I won’t call daycare to make sure.

Let the Translations begin…

Emily is talking quite a bit now.  She will even speak in full sentences, I think.  Other than "mama", nice, and "No", the words are not understandable.  She does say "Da", but I can’t figure out what that’s supposed to mean.  I did figure out one phrase the other day.  She said "ma um" which translates to my num (as in my nummy nummy), or I want the goldfish on the counter (not that I would necessarily understand it a second time).  It’s so cute; she’ll repeat the word and give it more emphasis putting her whole body into it when I don’t understand.

Emily’s Birthday Party

"Um, what do I do with this?"

"Okay, now I got it."

Happy Birthday, Emily!

Emily is one year old today.  Happy Birthday, my precious little girl!!  It’s been a wonderful year.  What a great stocking stuffer you’ve turned out to be!  I definitely believe in Santa again.

Happy Birthday, Emily - Mommy loves you!

All through the night

She’s doing it.  Finally, Emily is sleeping through the night.  The doctor had said it may take two weeks so I waited until my grad class was over, but it only took three days.  Phew!!

Up at night

Emily still gets up at night.  She used to get up two or three times, but I’ve managed to whittle it down to once a night by ignoring her early morning cries. Next week my grad class will be done so Emily will soon learn to sleep through the night, hopefully.  My pediatrician said it could take two weeks.  That’s a lot of crying.  I hope she figures it out sooner.  I’m tired just thinking about it.

A baby and graduate school

Who knew having a baby could make a simple graduate course so hard.  By the time I’m done with work, home with Emily, play, make and eat dinner, clean (maybe), put Emily to bed, I’m exhausted.  So, now I’ve decided to take two classes Spring semester.  If one class is torture, why not try two?  Hey, at least if I live through it, I may finish before I’m set to retire.  Is it summer yet?

More noodles please

Emily loves spaghetti but not just the noodles.  Nope, I gave her some noodles and she ate a few and then starting crying (or was she screaming?).  I took her out of her highchair and over to the kitchen.  She pointed to the spaghetti sauce.  I took her noodles put a little meat and sauce on them, back in the highchair, and we were good to go.  She practically inhaled it, and she ate a lot.  In fact, her daddy thought I was giving her too much – I think he said something about Emily exploding.  Of course, she needs to feed herself now so we went directly from the highchair to the bathtub.  Who knew dinner could be so much fun?  Well, minus the screaming.

Queen of Hearts – Juice Newton

So I’m a little embarrassed to tell this story, but just to get it out of the way I have a Juice Newton CD, and I like it.  My mom bought it for me because I used to love her when I was a kid.  I mean Queen of Hearts is just a fun song.  I also have it copied to my iPod.  One day I played it, and danced around the living room with Emily.  She giggled the whole time.  Now she loves the song Queen of Hearts.  We were playing in the living room not too long ago, and I absentmindedly started singing the song.  She looked at me and then looked at the iPod and then back at me.  That’s when I knew she’d become an addict.  It’s kind of nice because if she’s fussy or crying all you need to do is quietly sing Queen of Hearts to her, and she starts giggling and bouncing.  So there our dirty secret is out!
